Jason Merrells has long been a bit of a dish.

Currently putting paid to split ends in BBC’s fab hairdressing drama ‘Cutting It’, Jason certainly brightens up our Tuesday night viewing.

Our Jason originally trained as an artist, but then went on to get a BA degree in Performing Arts at Bishop Otter College, Chichester. His career got off to a lacklustre start with jobs as a runner, barman, van driver and tomato picker! He eventually found his way into medical drama Casualty as receptionist Matt Hawley in 1994. His shift turned out to be a bit of a long one, and he stayed on duty behind the infamous desk until 1997.

Jason has also starred in ‘Clocking Off’, ‘Fat Friends’, ‘Touch of Frost’, ‘The Inspector Lynley Mysteries’, ‘The Project’ and ‘Queer As Folk’.

His character Phil in Queer in Folk happens upon a rough spot of trade. Having got jiggy with sinister Harvey on the sofa, poor Phil (our Jason) overdoses and dies!

Jason has also graced the silver screen in ‘Do Not Disturb’ and ‘Small Time Obsession’. A man of many talents, he’s appeared in theatre productions of ‘Brighton Beach’, ‘Romeo & Juliet’ and ‘The Pleasure Man’.

He’s currently playing the lovely, yet heartbroken Gavin in ‘Cutting It’. Having been ditched by his two-timing wife, he’s currently at it like a ‘dog with two dicks’

Jason’s parents were initially sceptical about his choice of career

`Mum and Dad weren`t happy about me going into acting, but when I started working and got this part in Casualty, they were over the moon - they`re both big fans of the series.`

Jason’s brother, Simon, is also an actor and is best known for his role in London`s Burning as Officer Griggs.

Jason hasn’t quite got used to the fame side of things.

`I`ll sit on the train and wonder why I`m being stared at - then I remember I`m on TV.`

When he’s not acting up a storm on TV, Jason works out at the gym, swims and indulges in a spot of Thai Chi. He’s also accomplished in mime, painting, and fencing.

Jason split from wife, actress Judith Hurley.

`We got married on a whim, with our hairstyles it looked like Reggie Kray was marrying Zandra Rhodes.`

He has two daughters - Camilla and Gina.
