Liam Boyle and Nicky Bell star in the violent, sexy and funny Awaydays, a blade sharp rites of passage movie that buzzes with the post-punk energy of its late 70s Liverpool setting. When Carty meets Elvis at a Bunnymen gig, they fall headlong into a volatile friendship that each of them aches for but neither can control.
Based on the classic novel by Kevin Sampson, and pulsating to a soundtrack of Joy Division, The Cure,Echo & The Bunnymen and Ultravox, Awaydays examines identity, fate, the nature of male longings and their need to belong. It is the first major feature film to be set during, and evocatively portray, the first dawning of the football casual fashion cult.
As the film gets a welcome release on DVD, we meet up with the cute stars to find out a little bit more about the men behind the characters. If you want to find out what they thought about the film itself, then you’ll have to read our earlier interview with the boys!
If you had a super power what would it be?
Nicky: The power to have all super powers.
Liam: I’d just like to fly.
Where would you go?
Nicky: Berlin.
Liam: Yeah. I could go anywhere. If I could breathe in outer space, I would like to just fly around for a bit and see what happens. I’d like to go to Mars like that blue guy in Watchmen - what’s he called?
Nicky: Dr Manhattan.
Liam: Yeah. I’d like to sit on Mars with a can of beer, but it can’t get damaged when I go into space.
"I’m not interested in making loads of cash and wining Oscars, I just want to work. It's what I do for a living and I just want to be good at it."
If you could change any body part what would it be?
Nicky: Right now, my hair. We did an interesting photo shoot and they cut it weird.
Liam: I would like to have feet that no one will ever go Eww! at. Any kind of woman, any kind of man - people have this thing about feet and I’d like to have perfect feet.
What’s wrong with your feet?
Liam: Nothing, but my girlfriend always says she doesn’t like feet.
Nicky: I’d like to have a complete finger. That would be nice. I trapped my finger in the door when I was about seven. I can’t play the guitar properly because I can’t get my finger on the strings.
Liam: It’s a shame.
Nicky: I know. Bless me.
As you get more famous how are you going to stop your egos running wild?
Nicky: Family and friends. They do that enough for me already.
Liam: I don’t have to worry about that. I think knowing who you are is important and I’m someone who does that anyway, so I’m safe and I frown on people who are like that, really. Whatever happens in my career, big or small, I’ll still be Liam.

What do you think you need to be successful as an actor?
Liam: You’ve got to be determined. You’ve got to be able to cope with doors shutting and having everything thrown in your face. You’ve got be good and your skills might not be as good as they could be. I was worried after I watched my first line. I was crap, so you have to be willing to learn and be passionate and individual.
Nicky: Be able to take rejection because you will get rejected. And if people whisper good things in your ear you have to be able to take it with a pinch of salt because, if you don’t, that’s when you start getting big headed and thinking you’re something that you’re not.
Where would you like your career to be in five years? If you had your superpowers who would you like to work with?
Nicky: I’d like to work with Paddy Considine. I just want to work. I’m not interested in making loads of cash and wining Oscars, I just want to work. It's what I do for a living and I just want to be good at it. If Shane Meadows wants to offer me a role I wouldn’t say no.
Liam: I think what you said is true. Being happy in what you’re doing is very important. I want to enjoy what I do. Every film I’ve seen by Danny Boyle I’ve really, really enjoyed. They’re all so different and that director knows his beans. We have the same surname and we could maybe go back a few years and we might be related. Think of the diversity of what he does and the actors he uses.
"If people whisper good things in your ear you have to be able to take it with a pinch of salt because, if you don’t, that’s when you start getting big headed and thinking you’re something that you’re not."
There’s one scene with you Nicky when you charge towards your opponents and you have a psychotic look on your face that was terrifying. How did you get in to that mind set?
Nicky: We’d done one day of fighting the week before and it was the first fight that the Pack have. You get so pumped up from doing it because it takes a lot out of you and really want to get in there and get done right. If you slip, or turn the wrong way you’re going to get a crack in the face. So being so pumped up and concentrating on getting it right is really where that face came from.
Liam: The good thing about being an actor though is about being able to absorb yourself into a character for ten minutes. Its really interesting being able to go in and out of different personalities.
Nicky: You get to experience things you would never necessarily get a chance to experience yourself. I’m never going to be part of a football hooligan gang but I can experience that through someone else. That’s what I love about it.
What’s your porn name? It’s the name of your first pet and the road you first lived on.
Nicky: Goldie Stapleton
Liam: Duke Avenue
Nicky: That’s a bit Wild West isn’t it?!
That’s the most boring porn name I’ve ever heard in my life.
