It used to be that Marianne Faithful was the queen bee of sexy older women with husky voices, but now it looks like she's in danger of being knocked off her perch by her good friend Anita Pallenberg.
Unless you are the kind of dyke who soaks up pop culture trivia like the proverbial sponge, or who has a thing for early 1970s rock n roll, or even the films of Nic Roeg and Roger Vadim, you might not have heard of Ms P. Let me explain…
Born in Rome, in the 1960s Anita Pallenberg was all about the Rolling Stones, back when they were a credible force. First she was girlfriend to Brian Jones, who died tragically young by drowning in his swimming pool. Then she moved on to Keith Richards, via a fling with Mick Jagger.
As the "sixth Rolling Stone" she was cast in Performance, Nic Roeg's seminal film of that era. The film has recently been given a new theatrical release in the UK, so it looks likely that Pallenberg will attract a new generation of fans for her turn as the exotically wasted psychedelic hedonist living in a Notting Hill mansion.
Anyone who's ever seen Pallenberg as the Black Queen trying to seduce Jane Fonda in Barbarella will know that this gal ain't 100% straight. Openly bisexual, she is even rumoured to have had an affair with the late Princess Margaret!
The 70s and 80s were tough times for Pallenberg as she fought drugs and tried to generate a career for herself outside of modelling and being a famous rock star girlfriend. Happily her work paid off, she established herself as a stylist and is now a frequent contributor to the fashion press, including Vogue, and Cheap Date, where she is a contributing editor.
In the meantime, don't miss Performance if it comes to a cinema near you, it's a bit of an odd film, it has a cracking soundtrack and, of course, Ms P lights up the screen. Go sister!
